Intent
At Hevingham and Marsham Primary School Partnership, we believe that Music is that universal language, allowing children the opportunity to create, feel and think in a more unique way. Pupils will be engaged in music from different cultures, abilities and generations which will, in turn, develop a love of music. We want to use music to increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement to develop their talent as musicians. As pupils progress, they will develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and listen with discrimination to a broad range of musical canons.
Implementation
Our Music curriculum is delivered by both class teachers and specialised teaching from the Norfolk Music Hub. Both will be following a two-year rolling curriculum, designed by Sing Up. KS2 will be taught by Norfolk Music Hub, allowing the musically trained tutor to be able to successfully teach whole class ensembles using tuned instruments. KS1 will be taught by class teachers. Every child throughout their time at Hevingham and Marsham Primary School Partnership will experience teaching from both of these areas allowing them to learn skills and techniques taught using tuned and un-tuned instruments as well as the core knowledge, skills and structure which encompasses the music they are learning.
Children experience music from their first days within our Under 5s / Reception classes as it is an integral part of the child’s learning journey. Rhyme and rhythm are utilised throughout all areas of learning allowing the children to learn a wide range of songs and rhymes to develop skills for performing together. Singing and music making opportunities are used frequently to embed learning, develop musical awareness and demonstrate how music can be used to express feelings.
With these foundations we are able to develop confident individuals who enjoy learning and performing within Christmas nativities, carol concerts and end of year performances. Pupils also take part in singing assemblies which are themed to celebrations within the terms, e.g. Harvest and Easter.
Alongside our curriculum, pupils also have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument with the availability of 1:1 tuition.
